Omega 3:  What is it, where does it come from?

Fatty acids are labelled “essential” when they cannot be synthesised or made by the body. They are thus “essential” in the same way that vitamins are.

There are two types of omega 3:

- long-chain omega 3 fatty acids (EPA/DHA), which come from the sea (algae and fish) or from a vegetable oil (linseed oil and camelina oil). EPA and DHA are called “active omega 3”.

- short-chain omega 3 fatty acids (ALA), which are found in fresh vegetable and only when they are fresh. They are precursors that enzymes in the body transform into long-chain omega 3 fatty acids. The bio-availability of ALA in the body is fairly low. That means that large amounts must be consumed to achieve interesting omega 3 levels in the body.

A horse that grazes in a pasture thus takes in a lot of omega 3 (ALA) and its omega 6/omega 3 ratio is an ideal 4:1. A horse that is kept stabled has a completely imbalanced omega 6/omega 3 ratio of 16:1.

This is the capital, fundamental reason why Omega Power is a concentrate rich in long-chain omega 3 (EPA/DHA) of marine origin balanced with cold-pressed vegetable oil that is very rich in ALA. For example, 15 ml of Omega Power is equivalent to 240 ml of linseed oil (an oil that is known and highly reputed for its high omega 3 -ALA- content).

Omega Power:  mental health

In horses, supplementing with Omega Power has very regularly been found to reduce nervousness, anxiety, and lack of confidence, and thus to contribute to the animal's good mental health without an excitatory effect. The horse does not become hotter or fiery; it is just mentally balanced!

Omega Power:  joint support

One of the greatest challenges that all performance horse owners face is to prevent and control joint inflammation. An inflammation begins by affecting the soft tissues of a joint following repeated trauma or sudden stress on the joint. For example, great demands are constantly made of the fetlocks, knees, and hocks of reining horses. Horses whose diets contain omega 3 will thus be better prepared for intense physical effort thanks to the support that these fatty acids give to the body's anti-inflammatory response.

For horses, a daily dietary supplement of 8-15 gm of long-chain omega 3 fatty acids is considered to be warranted, depending on the animal's physiological state.

Omega Power:  a healthy heart

Many publications have underlined the protective role that omega 3 has in preventing cardiovascular disease. These fatty acids on their own have no effect on cholesterol levels, but are very important in reducing cardiovascular risks in other ways. So, they reduce the level of triglycerides (fats) in the blood, but also reduce heart rhythm disorders, prevent the formation of blood clots, and keep the walls of the blood vessels supple.

Omega Power :

- Helps maintain physical performance levels,

- Supports joint function,

- Contributes to cardiovascular health,

- Helps maintain healthy skin and a well-nourished coat,

- Plays a role in preventing cellular oxidation,

- Prevents omega 3 deficiencies,

- Is a source of eicosapentaenoic and docosahexaenoic acid (EPA and DHA),

- Is a source of vitamin E and anti-oxidants.

Kevin Bacon`s Horse Care

Kevin Bacon`s Horse Care

The story of Kevin Bacon’s hoof dressing began on the shop floor of my general butcher's and pork butcher's business near Liège in the 1980s. I had just bought a mare with a clipped heel and was unable to find anything that would get the horn to grow back. A friend then suggested that I make my own hoof dressing, something that my trade made easier.
